- Human Placental Extract Explained
Used for many decades in Japan and Korea. human placenta extract (HPE) is a normal part of medicine. This therapy has now broken through to being used in many other countries. This use is largely medical; however, it has now become popular in the wellness industry. Image by Chris0223 from Pixabay What is Human Placenta Extract? The process of creating this interesting product is quite in-depth and starts, naturally, with a pregnant volunteer. The woman is screened and asked several questions regarding her health, lifestyle, travel history and more. The placenta is collected after a planned delivery, it is then cleaned, sterilised, and tested. The next step processes it into a powder to be reconstituted into a liquid. Uses and Effects So how is this wonder drug used? In South Korean medical settings, these drugs are primarily used for menopause symptoms and chronic hepatitis (liver disease). However, as time went by and studies were done, it was found these medications had various benefits and effects such as: Being anti-inflammatory Promoting wound healing Being antioxidant Hair growth/acceleration where there was loss/slow growth Accelerating healing injuries such as ligament damage Adoption by Other Industries It’s common for breakthroughs in aesthetics, cosmetics and wellness to be based on medical products. After all, they’re medically proven and often promote wound healing. Where there is wound healing, there is a chance to rejuvenate the outside as well as the inside. Animal placenta extract had already been used in some topical cosmetics but there was room for more. Human placental extract (HPE) is seen as a step above, it’s made up of several biologically active substances cherished by those seeking youthfulness and wellness. These include: Amino Acids (Eg: alanine, arginine) – Known as the building blocks for protein Vitamins (Eg: B6, B12) – Nutrients required to function and promote health Growth Factors (Epidermal, Fibroblast) – Proteins that stimulate cell growth Cytokines – Molecules that send messages between cells Image by BiancaVanDijk from Pixabay Prominent Products Two of the first HPE products created are Melsmon (1956) and Laennec (1974) and are still in use to this day. During various studies and tests, they were found to help with many various ailments like: Painful/stiff joints Chronic fatigue Muscle pain Depression Skin issues Melsmon was created to assist with menopausal and menstrual issues and Laennec with liver conditions. Therapeutic clinics now use them for the above ailments but also for skin rejuvenation. What is Laennec? Known as a powerful hepatoprotector, it promotes complex rejuvenation and restoration of the body at the cellular level. It’s creators state that it gives “antioxidative protection and restoration of metabolic processes in tissues, increases general immunity, effectively heals the body in a natural way”. Laennec has been successfully used for many years in South Korea, the USA, Canada and the countries of the European Union. In cosmetology it is used in the form of injections for rejuvenating the skin of the face and body, as well as for treating hair and scalp. How Does it Help the Skin? Improves skin tone, texture, elasticity and moisture level Enhances the synthesis of collagen and elastin, by stimulating the growth of collagen and fibroblasts Reduces the downtime of other aesthetic interventions, including plastic surgery Assists in the treatment of various forms of hair loss As an adjuvant therapy for other skin problems such as psoriasis, acne, dermatitis etc Safety and Contraindications Laennec is extremely well tolerated, and studies show allergic reactions make up less than 0.4% of cases. Contraindications for use are pregnancy, breastfeeding, use in children and hypersensitivity. Laennec can prolong other aesthetic procedures such as fillers and threads, does not interact with botulinum toxin muscle relaxers and does not interfere with cosmetic device-assisted procedures such as microneedling, laser, or radio frequency. The methodology used can vary. An IV drip or intramuscular injections can be used with the average course duration 1-1.5 months and maintenance at longer intervals after. Results are usually noticeable after a few procedures. As with all medications, there are potential side effects, these include allergic reactions, temporary drowsiness, irregular menstruation and very rarely, liver issues and headaches. Safety and Sourcing These two popular HPE products are strictly governed at a state ministerial level. Stringent protocols must be adhered to, and donors are tested for several things such as DNA/RNA abnormalities, HIV, vCJD, viruses, bacterial infections, STIs, cancer and more. Explicit consent is gained each time and all batches are traceable. While JBP states that off-label use of Laennec is to be “avoided”, many are having success with it helping them feel and look younger. However, diligence is always required when considering a product not previously used! Clinics and medical professionals will always be happy to guide you through their processes and if acquiring directly, ensure you use a reputable source. Still Curious? - Understanding the Ageing Process: Why Our Skin Changes and How to Support It
Ageing is a journey that affects every part of our body, but it’s most visible in our skin. As we age, changes occur on a cellular and structural level that lead to wrinkles, sagging, dryness, and other visible signs of getting older. To support (dis)graceful ageing, it helps to understand what’s happening beneath the surface. Here, we’ll explore the mechanisms of skin ageing, the factors that accelerate it, and how lifestyle changes can slow its progress. What Causes Skin to Age? 1. Collagen and Elastin Decline Collagen is a protein that gives our skin structure and strength. By our mid-20s, we start producing about 1% less collagen per year , causing skin to lose its firmness and volume over time. Elastin provides skin with its ability to stretch and snap back, like a rubber band. As we age, elastin fibres become less efficient, leading to loose, sagging skin. Combined with reduced collagen, this decline contributes to the formation of fine lines and deeper wrinkles. 2. Thinning of the Epidermis The outermost layer of skin, the epidermis , becomes thinner and more fragile with age. This makes it easier to see veins, gives a translucent appearance, and makes the skin more prone to injury and irritation. 3. Fat Loss and Volume Changes Beneath the skin lies a layer of fat that provides support and a youthful contour. Over time, we lose fat in certain areas, like the cheeks and around the eyes, which contributes to hollowing and sagging. Conversely, fat may accumulate in other areas, such as under the chin or around the jawline. 4. Slower Cell Turnover Younger skin regenerates quickly, with skin cells turning over approximately every 28 days. As we age, this rate slows dramatically, leading to a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface. This results in a duller complexion and rough texture. 5. Reduced Oil Production As hormone levels change, especially during menopause for women, sebaceous glands produce less oil. While this may reduce acne, it also means drier, less hydrated skin. Reduced moisture exacerbates the appearance of fine lines and creates a rougher feel. 6. Changes in Pigmentation Over the years, cumulative sun exposure and hormonal changes can cause pigmentation issues , such as sunspots, age spots, and uneven skin tone. The skin’s ability to repair damage from UV radiation also diminishes, leading to further discoloration. Factors That Accelerate the Aging Process Sun Exposure (Photoaging) The number one cause of premature skin aging is ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. It breaks down collagen and impairs the skin’s ability to repair itself, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and dark spots. Up to 80% of visible facial ageing is attributed to sun exposure. Lifestyle Choices Smoking : Smoking narrows blood vessels and depletes oxygen and nutrients that are crucial for skin health. It also accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Diet : A poor diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates can lead to inflammation and damage to the skin’s structure. Conversely, antioxidant-rich foods (like fruits and vegetables) protect and support healthy skin aging. Stress and Lack of Sleep : Chronic stress and insufficient sleep increase cortisol levels, which can break down collagen and thin the skin over time. Genetics (Intrinsic Aging) Our genetic makeup plays a role in how we age, including when and how wrinkles form, how quickly skin loses its firmness, and whether pigmentation issues occur. This is known as intrinsic ageing , and it can vary widely from person to person. Environmental Toxins Exposure to pollution, chemicals, and environmental toxins can accelerate skin aging by increasing oxidative stress. Free radicals generated from pollution attack healthy cells, degrading collagen and elastin. Supporting Your Skin Through Ageing While we can’t stop the clock, we can make lifestyle changes to slow the aging process and maintain skin health: Sun Protection is Essential Wearing sunscreen with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily is critical for protecting collagen and preventing further damage. Hydration and Moisturization Keeping skin hydrated helps maintain its barrier function and reduces the appearance of fine lines. Drink plenty of water and use moisturizers suited to your skin type. Nutrition Matters A balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins (especially Vitamin C and E) can support collagen production and protect against oxidative stress. Sleep and Stress Management Adequate sleep allows the skin to repair itself overnight. Managing stress through practices like meditation or regular exercise can also reduce inflammation and cortisol levels. Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol Both smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate the skin and accelerate collagen breakdown. Remember to Keep a Positive Outlook! Ageing is a natural and beautiful process, reflecting the experiences and wisdom gained over time. While it's fine to focus on maintaining your skin, it’s also important to focus on feeling confident at every stage of life. Education, preventative care, and smart lifestyle choices can help you glow from within, making the journey through ageing a rewarding one. Treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, fillers, peels, and skin boosters can all play a part in this maintenance and also offer a sense of control over the situation. Do remember though, you're tweaking what you have, not creating something you don't. Don't expect too much at once and enjoy your DIY journey! - What are Threads & What do they do?
This post is to go hand in hand with my series of How to do Threads Videos PDO threads These are the most popular ones used in aesthetic practice, they last 6-12 months, which means they are completely absorbed within 6-8 months and will continue to stimulate collagen production for another 4-6 months. PDO threads cause changes in the subcutaneous level (dermis), they induce an inflammatory reaction, and stimulate new collagen production. PDO threads are effective in improving pores, & fine wrinkles, by causing collagen to form in the dermal matrix to increase the thickness of thinning skin. Body PDO Threads are used to tighten sagging skin on the stomach, buttocks, back, inner thighs, and upper arms, treat cellulite and stretch marks. PLLA threads PLLA threads can last up to 1-2 years after insertion and will eventually be broken down PLLA threads are often used as an alternative to fillers and botulinum toxin, as they act as a volumizer and are able to stimulate the production of Type 1 and Type 3 collagen. They are much more powerful collagen stimulators than PDO threads, however they are a lot stiffer & take longer to settle. These are the the ones you’re more inclined to experience the “pinchy” feeling with PCL threads PCL threads have become more popular over the last few years. They last more than 2 years in the body and are also broken down into naturally occurring substances in our skin. Due to the length of collagen stimulation, they are more powerful than PDO or PLLA threads. These are best used for jawline tightening, nose lift, and mid-face tissue replacement. A sterile environment & a super clean face & hands are of the utmost importance when using threads. Make sure your hands and face are clean, & clean the area with an alcohol swab or with something like hypochlorous spray, Hibiclens or an antimicrobial wound spray. As a starter thread, PDO is your best bet as they break down a lot faster, even though you need to do them more often. As a general guide, threads are repeated every 4-6 weeks initially, until you get the results you’re happy with. It’s then a case of continuing every 2-3 months in the same area to maintain the results Thread bumps……..These occur if you don’t hit the correct plane, or you don’t push the thread in all the way ie all the way to the little handle. If this happens, you can place a piece of surgical tape over the bump (replacing it every day) or you can apply gentle heat ie an RF device, a warm compress, or even a warm coffee mug held against the face. This will soften the thread & help it settle quicker. If a thread works its way out, this is usually because it was in the wrong plane, or not pushed in fully. If you see a little tail of a thread, clean the area with alcohol or hypochlorous spray, & with some clean tweezers that you’ve soaked in alcohol, grab the tail & extract the thread. This will only work with smooth or screw threads, you can’t extract a cog thread this way, because the little barbs will have grabbed onto the skin, & you can cause tissue damage.
